What is educational leadership?
It's no secret that effective leaders play a critical role in the success of organisations and businesses, large and small. And there are many leadership models to choose from. One that often stands out is educational leadership. Not only for its focus on learning and inclusivity, but also for its potential to improve productivity and employee engagement in the workplace. If new learning and knowledge is encouraged both in the workplace itself and in the form of courses and training, it provides benefits for the business and also the individual employee.
Educational leadership often combines elements of different techniques but mainly focuses on providing guidance and support to motivate and develop employees and teams. This means that you as a leader implement a culture where learning and development are at the core of employees' work.
How do you use educational leadership in the workplace?
Here are three key components to consider when implementing educational leadership
- Cultivate a culture of learning: This entails nurturing an environment where emplyees are encouraged to continuously seek avenues for professional and personal growth.
- Coaching and guidance: Leaders play a pivotal role in providing ongoing feedback and support to help employees identify their strengths and areas for improvement.
- Promote teamwork: Educational leaders focus on the development of strong teams that are capable of collaborative and effective work. These teams understand both individual and collective responsibilities, driving shared success.

Pros & Cons
As with all leadership theories, there are both advantages and disadvantages of educational leadership. It may not be suitable for all employees or in all workplaces.
There are several advantages to this leadership model, impacting both individuals and companies:
- Deeper understanding: Educational leadership creates a deeper understanding among employees regarding their work, the rationale behind certain methods and the significance of continuous learning. This can result in higher engagement and motivation among the team.
- Strengthening team culture: By emphasising the importance of working together, educational leaders can build stronger teams.
- Positive work environment: Educational leadership can contribute to creating an open, cooperative and positive work environment.
Despite its advantages, there can also be disadvantages of educational leadership:
- Time-consuming: Implementing this type of leadership style requires a lot of time and commitment from the leader. It's also the kind of leadership method that requires constant maintenance.
- Group dynamics: In teams where there are strong personalities, it can be difficult to implement educational leadership. It can create conflicts or disagreements among employees.
- Respect for authority: Because educational leadership focuses on an inclusive leadership style, some employees may misunderstand this as a lack of strong leadership, which can lead to a lack of respect or authority.
Summary
Educational leadership is not only applicable in schools but can also be used within companies and organisations. It focuses on learning, personal development and inclusion. Educational leadership can increase productivity and employee engagement. By promoting a culture of learning and development, educational leaders can motivate and develop both individual employees and teams.
