Trending: Bring Nature Indoors to Enhance Your Workplace

Incorporating greenery into office spaces isn’t just about aesthetics – it can significantly improve both the work environment and employee productivity. The concept of biophilic design is gaining popularity, with more companies embracing green solutions to create healthier and more inspiring workplaces.

Transforming office spaces with elements of nature has become increasingly popular. By incorporating plants, natural light, earthy tones and organic materials, workplaces are being designed to promote both comfort and productivity. These nature-inspired environments boost employee well-being while enhancing overall performance.

At its most basic, biophilic design involves adding a few potted plants to the office but it can go far beyond that. Rooted in the biophilia hypothesis, this approach is based on the idea that humans have a deep connection to nature and a fundamental need to be near it.

There is a growing interest in using natural materials and solutions. It’s not just about designing an attractive space but, more importantly, about creating a workplace where employees thrive and can perform at their best, says Elisabet Nilsson, Category Manager at AJ Products.

Reduces Absenteeism

Research shows that incorporating natural elements like plants and daylight can both lower stress levels and boost productivity. Greener office environments have also been found to improve employee well-being. A study from the World Green Building Council reveals that workplaces investing in biophilic design can reduce sickness-related absenteeism by up to ten percent!

At AJ Products, we have tailored our range to support companies in designing greener, more inviting workplaces. One example is sound absorbers made from lichen, which not only reduce noise but also bring a serene, natural atmosphere to the office.

“These living absorbents are an easy way to blend functionality with design, creating a harmonious work environment,” says Elisabet Nilsson.

Don't underestimate artificial plants

Bringing nature into the office doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated, Elisabet Nilsson emphasizes. Small changes, like adding a few plants or improving lighting, can have a significant impact. Research from the University of Exeter, which studied monotonous work environments over more than a decade, found that even a handful of potted plants could boost productivity by 15 percent.

“It’s fascinating how something so simple can transform the atmosphere in a workplace,” says Elisabet Nilsson.

When incorporating greenery into office spaces, live plants aren’t the only option. Artificial plants have advanced significantly in recent years, becoming incredibly lifelike and a practical alternative in many situations. Not only do they make excellent decorative elements, but studies suggest they may offer similar benefits to well-being as real plants, especially when their realistic appearance makes them indistinguishable from natural ones. Additionally, artificial plants are hypoallergenic, low-maintenance and cost-effective, as they don’t require replacement or upkeep like live plants do.

But biophilic design is not just about plants. This may mean letting in more daylight, using natural materials such as wood and "natural colors" or creating rooms with a view of greenery outside.

- We have included and plan to include even more natural elements and artificial plants in our range, says Elisabet Nilsson.

Nature as a competitve edge

An attractive office space is increasingly seen as a key factor in standing out amidst the competition to recruit top talent, particularly among younger generations who prioritise health and well-being. According to Castellum's Framtidens 2024 report, 81% of respondents indicated that the office environment plays a crucial role when considering a new job.

“Biophilic design can be a competitive advantage for companies aiming to attract and retain talent. It’s a straightforward investment that significantly enhances both well-being and the workplace atmosphere,” says Elisabet Nilsson.
